The vote is in!

Despite the shenanigans south of the border, democracy still works. The residents have voted, and Justin Hall and Cristian Toarta have been chosen as the program’s 2017-18 chief residents! Justin and Cristian have assured me they will not repeal the previous chief residents' Ice Cream Rounds, will not ban faculty entry into academic day, and will not boast incessantly about their inauguration day successes!

I couldn’t resist the US elections jokes! I am truly thrilled to have Justin and Cristian as our new chiefs. At first glance, Justin and Cristian are yin and yang: Justin likes to run miles on end across Toronto, while Cristian likes to groove to electronic music; Cristian struts a funky suit at a social event, while Justin chills in his t-shirt and shorts. But a closer look reveals a shared vision: diligent advocacy for the resident voice, leading by example in research and academic endeavours, and endless dedication to emergency medicine.

With any peaceful transition of power, there is an opportunity to reflect on those who will pass on the baton. Alia Dharamsi and Ahmed Taher have done an exemplary job as chief residents this past year — they have implemented the new academic day block system, instituted the resident wellness Ice Cream Rounds, and they both bring a very personal, positive outlook to their work that is contagious, and it shows in our program. The program has been incredibly fortunate to have them as chief residents this past year.

Please join me in congratulating our new chiefs Justin and Cristian, and thanking Alia and Ahmed! The handover process has started…you will hear more from Justin and Cristian in the upcoming months.
