We are pleased to announce that Dr. Claire Heslop has accepted a full-time appointment as Assistant Professor, Clinician-Teacher, in the Division of Emergency Medicine, Department of Medicine.

Dr. Heslop is staff in the emergency department at University Health Network. Additionally, she works casually in the Department of Paediatrics, Division of Emergency Services,Hospital for Sick Children. She completed her residency in emergency medicine at the University of Toronto. During her PGY-4 year of residency, she completed advanced training in Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) at the University of Toronto. In addition, she recently finished her certificate in Medical Education for Health Professionals at the University of Dundee.

Dr. Heslop's clinical, academic and scholarly focus is emergency point of care ultrasound (POCUS), with a particular emphasis on curriculum development and providing hands-on POCUS training for EM trainees and staff physicians. In the short term, she will provide POCUS training and clinical applications at UHN, and also at The Hospital for Sick Children. She plans to collaborate with another UHN faculty who is a leader in POCUS education to develop ultrasound quality assurance, education, and research initiatives. In addition, she will work to develop “kits” for ultrasound-guided EM procedures, education reference materials to support learning retention, and training modules for the undergraduates and postgraduates. As a co-lead in the Undergraduate Ultrasound Curriculum Committee, she is directing the development and integration of POCUS undergraduate clerkship curriculum, which will include applications across most medical specialties.
